People who drink coffee reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s

A study conducted by Finnish and Swedish researchers showed that middle-aged coffee drinkers have a significantly lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

The results are based on a study which lasted more than two decades. The researches collaborated with the National Public Health Institute in Helsinki where 1.409 test subjects were included. Based on their coffee consumption they were put into three groups:

Low consumption group: 0-2 cups per day

Moderate consumption group: 3-5 cups per day

High consumption group: over 5 cups per day

It was established that middle-aged people, who drank between three and five cups of coffee a day (moderate consumption group), lowered their risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer's disease by 60 to 65 percent.

The participants were first interviewed and had memory tests when they were in their 50s. The memory test was conducted again when they were between 65 and 79 years of age.

This was the first test ever which lasted for over two decades and the first study, which was directed at dementia and Alzheimer’s.  It remains unclear, exactly how and why moderate coffee drinking helps to delay or avoid the onset of dementia, but it’s a well-known fact, that coffee contains strong antioxidants. Antioxidants help to protect the nerve system, which protects the brain, and coffee also helps to prevent diabetes, which can contribute to Alzheimer’s.

As always, check with your doctor before adding caffeine with your diet.
